Understanding Bonaire's Climate and Weather

Bonaire enjoys a tropical semi-arid climate, with consistently warm temperatures and abundant sunshine year-round. Daily highs range from approximately 30 °C (86 °F) to a peak of 33 °C (91 °F) during the hotter months (May–October). The island receives modest rainfall, mostly between October and December, but even then, rain remains light. Trade winds provide welcome relief from the heat throughout the year. Expect predominantly sunny days, gentle breezes, very little rain (unless you're visiting in the wetter season), perfect for outdoor adventures.

Essential Packing Tips for a Bonaire Vacation

Packing Tips:

  • Opt for lightweight, breathable clothing, like cotton, linen, or moisture-wicking blends, think T-shirts, shorts, sundresses, and swimwear.
  • Bring sun-protective layers. A lightweight long-sleeve shirt or rash guard offers UV defense and cooling comfort for the hot Caribbean sun.
  • Select durable footwear. For the rugged shoreline, wear hard-sole shoes, paired with water shoes or fins (if snorkeling) to protect your feet from coral rubble and rocks.
  • Don’t forget essentials. Reef-safe sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat (with chinstrap for windy days), UV sunglasses, and insect repellent (especially needed during dusk and dawn, and heavier mosquito activity in the rainy season).
  • Pack reusable items. To minimize plastic waste, bring a refillable water bottle and eco-friendly personal care containers.
  • Invest in waterproof storage. A waterproof phone satchel or larger dry bag protects valuables on beach days or water excursions.
  • Be prepared for adapters. Some accommodations support both U.S. and European plugs, however bringing a universal adapter is smart and extremely useful.

Eco-Friendly Packing for Bonaire

Eco-Friendly Product Suggestions

Protecting your skin and Bonaire’s fragile marine life go hand in hand. The island has banned chemical sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate because they damage coral reefs and disrupt marine ecosystems. Instead, choose mineral-based options that use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as their active ingredients. These create a physical barrier that reflects UV rays without releasing harmful chemicals into the water. Look for lotions labeled “reef-safe” or “reef-friendly,” and avoid spray sunscreens. Using reef-safe sunscreen ensures your family stays protected while helping preserve Bonaire’s crystal-clear waters and thriving reefs.

Reduce Plastic Waste While Traveling

Bring your own refillable bottles for shampoo, conditioner, and body wash to cut down on single-use plastics. This simple step reduces waste on the island, eases pressure on limited landfill space, and supports Bonaire’s commitment to sustainability while keeping your family’s routine both easy and eco-friendly.

Bring your own reusable items, such as water bottles, straws, shopping bags, or food containers, to minimize reliance on single-use plastics. This small change helps keep Bonaire’s beaches and reefs clean, reduces pressure on local waste systems, and supports the island’s commitment to protecting its fragile environment.

On October 19, 2021, the Island Council passed a law banning various disposable plastic items such as plastic bags, straws, stirrers, and cutlery. The ban officially took effect on June 1, 2022, for those items. Styrofoam (polystyrene) meal containers were added to the ban starting August 1, 2022. Enforcement ramped up on December 1, 2022, when businesses violating the ban began receiving formal warnings followed by fines and possible forced compliance if they failed to adapt. In less than a year, Bonaire moved from law adoption to implementation and enforcement, reducing single-use plastic and strengthening its bid toward a cleaner, more sustainable island.
